Powered by Android TV, the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 features loud but clear audio, good clarity, and a somewhat brighter image. While daylight use is still not recommended, this projector shines in a dark environment.
Quick specs
- 500 ANSI lumens at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
- Screen sizes from 60- to 120-inch
- Dolby Audio, 2x 5W speakers
Unlike the Samsung Freestyle, the Mi Smart Projector 2 runs Android TV. You don't need a special dongle like the BenQ GV30. Instead, the projector runs Android TV natively, so you can download and update apps from the Google Play Store easily. There's also Chromecast support for casting videos from YouTube or Viu. This already makes it infinitely better than the rubbish that is the Lumos Auro (plus the Mi is brighter, too).

It's pretty easy to set up the projector. Since it's running Android TV, you can quickly do so with an Android phone. Or you can slowly use the remote to key in your account and password. Passwords you had previously stored with Google can be used to sign into apps such as Netflix. While you can place the projector on a table, there's also the option to mount it on a ceiling or a tripod with a 1/4-inch screw mount at the bottom. The remote control is sufficient to control almost everything you need. The auto-focus is good, but the auto-keystone may appear off initially if the projector is at an angle. But it's easy to adjust.

The Mi Smart Projector throws up to a 120-inch image at full-HD resolution. The 500 ANSI lumens is brighter than the GV30 or the Freestyle. It's still slightly dim in bright daylight, but it's watchable. You are still best watching at night or with drawn shades. Audio can get quite loud, which can lead to the bass becoming a little distorted at maximum volume, but the sound is generally clear. You will need a tripod if you intend to tilt it upwards, as you don't want to block the air vents.
At around S$849 or less, the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector 2 is cheaper than many 500 ANSI lumens projectors. The presence of Android TV alone is worth the price of admission, since it makes the experience so much better. Get it from Shopee or Lazada.
