If it's good enough for the pros, it should be good enough for home cooks right? That's the question I'm asking of the Tramontina Professional Nonstick Fry Pan, which is designed to withstand the rigours of a professional kitchen.
Quick specs
- 10-inch (25.4cm), 1kg
- Heavy gauge aluminium
- PFOA-free nonstick and dishwasher-safe
- Removable silicone grip
Made from commercial grade, heavy-gauge aluminium, the 10-inch version that I tested feels solid, sturdy and well-made. At around 1kg, it is heavier than some nonstick pans but I like its heft. It doesn't shift around on the stove like lighter ones, and is probably more resistant to warping. But I think the larger versions (12- and 14-inches) would be rather unwieldy to use. The pan heats up relatively fast and evenly at medium heat (Tramontina says to use low to medium heat only).

Cooking eggs was a breeze with this nonstick fry pan. They released effortlessly from the pan even when no oil was used. The few bits of egg residue in the pan were cleaned easily with just mild detergent and water. While the satin finish of the nonstick layer still looked as good as new after a couple of days, the pan's silver bottom already had a few scratches.

Softening the pan's hard and flat steel handle is an eye-catching red silicone soft-grip. This soft-grip can withstand temperatures of up to 204 degrees Celsius, while the fry pan itself is good up to 260 degrees Celsius. So you can transfer the entire pan from the stove to the oven to finish cooking. The pan measures just under 50cm from end to end, and fits nicely in my oven. Just remember to use pot holders if you did not remove the soft-grip before the transfer — it is easy to forget that.
The Tramontina Professional Nonstick Fry Pan offers good nonstick performance. Time will tell how well the nonstick layer holds up. You can find the different sizes on Amazon (US import), but the prices doesn't seem to make sense. For instance, I bought a two-pack (10-inch) for around S$60, which is surprisingly affordable. But it costs over S$70 if you just purchase a single pan. The same goes for the 8-inch version. In short, find a friend to split the cost. However, if you have an induction stove — this pan is not for you. Try this other Tramontina fry pan instead.
