SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless review: Versatile and affordable

SteelSeries Arctis 1 wireless gaming headset

Wireless gaming headsets are a dime a dozen but few are as versatile as the SteelSeries Arctis 1 wireless gaming headset. Not only does it work with PCs, it will also connect wirelessly with gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch.

Quick specs

  • Wireless compatibility with Android, PC, PS4 and Switch
  • 2.4GHz USB-C wireless dongle
  • Noise-cancelling detachable microphone
  • Up to 20hr battery life

Instead of Bluetooth, the SteelSeries comes with a 2.4GHz USB-C wireless dongle. So you can plug this compact dongle directly to the USB-C port in the Switch or most modern Android smartphones — no drivers required. The wireless range (up to 9m) is good. I could walk around my home with the headset without losing the connection. A USB-C to USB-A adapter is included while a 3.5mm jack is found on the SteelSeries' left cup. No carrying case, though.

Looks-wise, the SteelSeries is more workman-like than stylish. Its plastic build is not as premium as higher-end models, but its steel-reinforced headband is sturdy. More importantly, the SteelSeries is lightweight and comfortable. The fabric ear pads are not as warm as leather ones, but the ear cups themselves could be larger.

Audio quality is better than expected. The SteelSeries sounds neutral and is not as bass heavy as some gaming headphones. This makes it pretty decent for music. However, gamers may be disappointed at the lack of a virtual surround feature. The microphone sounds clear without any distortion, but its noise-cancelling feature is merely passable. In my experience, the SteelSeries lives up to its advertised battery life (up to 20 hours) and more.

The SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless is a no-frills wireless gaming headset that works with a wide range of devices. It also looks understated enough that you won't draw attention when using it with your smartphone on your daily commute. At around S$169, it is definitely a steal.
