Solid-state drives are more affordable than ever. But if I'm looking to store my ever-expanding library of games, an external hard drive like the Seagate Spider-Man Special Edition FireCuda would be a more cost-effective solution. It costs S$139 for 2TB of storage compared to an SSD like the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield (S$379 for 2TB). And the Seagate even has flashy RGB LEDs to jazz up your gaming PC or game console, too.
Quick specs
- 2TB capacity
- 3-year warranty
- Customisable RGB LED lighting
- Works with PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox
This Seagate drive is part of the brand's collectible series of external hard drives featuring limited edition artwork from popular franchises. My review unit is the Spider-Man edition, but Seagate also sells a Ghost-Spider (aka Gwen Stacy), and a Miles Morales version. The drive comes with a USB-A cable (USB 3.2 Gen1) and a bunch of Marvel and Seagate FireCuda stickers. Seagate offers a three-year warranty for the drive, including data recovery services.

While you can use the drive simply by plugging it into a USB-A port on your computer, I recommending installing Seagate's Toolkit app (for Windows and MacOS). This app comes with easy-to-use tools that help you schedule a backup, or mirror the contents of your computer. More importantly, the app lets you customise the RGB LED lighting, which is white by default. The Seagate drive also supports Razer's Chroma RGB lighting system. This means you can sync the RGB lighting scheme with other Chroma-compatible devices. However, you'll need to download Razer Synapse on the same computer. The RGB LED options are pretty standard, such as static and breathing lighting schemes. Your last-saved RGB LED settings remain, even if you plug the drive into a different computer or even a game console.

Speeds are typical of an external hard drive. Using the CrystalDiskMark benchmark, the Seagate drive produced read and write speeds of around 133MB/s. Of course, these figures pale in comparison to SSDs, which are at least 10 times faster. In my testing, it takes around 8 seconds to transfer a 1GB file from a laptop to the Seagate drive.
As you'd expect from a limited edition product, the Seagate Spider-Man Special Edition FireCuda external hard drive is slightly more expensive than a standard model. The RGB LEDs and Spider-Man artwork could be worth the extra for fans. And if Spider-Man's not your thing, Seagate has other collectible hard drives inspired by the likes of Star Wars, Halo, and Horizon Forbidden West. You can get the Seagate drive for S$139 from Shopee and Lazada.
