MSI RadiX AX6600 WiFi 6 Tri-Band Gaming Router review: Decent performer

MSI Radix AX6600

MSI is known more for its PC components, and computers. So I was surprised to learn that the Taiwanese manufacturer also sells a router now. The MSI RadiX AX6600 gaming router offers tri-band Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, and comes with a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port. It looks like your typical gaming router, and has a snappy interface, though it lacks some features offered by competitors.

Quick specs

  • Tri-band Wi-Fi 6 (AX6600)
  • 2.5Gbps Gigabit WAN/LAN port, 4x Gigabit LAN ports
  • AI QoS and premium cooling design

Bristling with six adjustable antennas, and a lightweight plastic chassis that's all angles, the MSI RadiX AX6600 has the usual gaming vibes. Thankfully, there are no backlit logos or LED strips, just the basic LED indicators to show the connection status. And you can even turn these LEDs off with the press of a button. The router comes with five ports (4 LAN, 1 WAN). This WAN/LAN port (decked in red) supports up to 2.5Gbps. But unlike some gaming routers in the market, there's no support for link aggregation or dual WAN. You can find plenty of cooling vents at the bottom of the router, which gets moderately warm during operation. Also printed here are the login details to set up the device for the first time, including a QR code if you're using the MSI Router app.

Besides setting up the router, the MSI Router app also has some basic settings such as firmware updates, guest networks, and QoS. For most users, this app is sufficient to get the job done, but for more tech-savvy users, it's better to use the router's browser interface. That's where you'll find the advanced options. For example, you can change the channel bandwidth (note that one of its two 5GHz channels supports the 160MHz bandwidth that enables higher speeds) or set up the firewall rules, and URL filters. The interface itself is snappy, and responsive. But I think the MSI router lacks some features that you'd find in its competitors. For example, the parental controls are rather basic — there are six undesirable categories (Adult, Gambling, etc), but you don't really know which websites or apps they block. There's also no bundled security suite, unlike some other brands.

I tested the download speed of the MSI router using two laptops around 5m apart. One was connected to the router via Ethernet, while the other was connected via Wi-Fi 6. The MSI router produced an average download speed of 636Mbps using the Smart Connect feature that combines all the Wi-Fi bands into one SSID, and relies on the router to pick the best one. This improved slightly to 754Mbps when I split the channels, and used only the 5GHz channel. Unsurprisingly speeds dipped significantly in a distant bedroom (with the door closed). I recorded 125Mbps, and there were intermittent, occasional disconnections in that room during my one-week test.

At S$399, the MSI RadiX AX6600 WiFi 6 Tri-Band Gaming Router is slightly more expensive than gaming routers from rivals such as Asus. But these Asus models, such as the ASUS TUF Gaming TUF-AX6000 (S$309) are dual-band routers, not tri-band like the MSI. On the other hand, Asus has more gaming-centric features, such as the WTFast private gaming network, and even supports mesh networks with compatible Asus routers. In short, while the MSI router is decent, it doesn't offer a compelling enough reason for consumers to pick it over other more established brands. It's available now from Shopee, and Lazada.
