Magic: The Gathering Phyrexia: All Will Be One

Popular trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, returns with yet another expansion set. As the name suggests, Phyrexia: All Will be One sees players returning to the plane of Argentu — wait I mean Mirrodi — wait no, New Phyrexia or whatever new names they are going to be calling this beloved plane in the future.

Quick notes

  • New and fun mechanics that fit the Phyrexian theme
  • Poison counters and Phyrexian mana return
  • Compleat edition bundle is drool worthy

This is a plane that is very close to my heart because I started playing the game when Magic first visited the plane back in 2003. Fast forward 20 years, the once flawless artificial plane is currently corrupted with the Phyrexian oil. Our heroes from the previous sets are bringing the war to the Phyrexian home turf, hoping to end it once and for all. And slight spoilers ahead, many of these heroes will be compleated — i.e turned into Phyrexians — the Phyrexian machines leave no wasted bio-materials behind.

As this set is based around the Phyrexians, poison counters, and Phyrexian mana are back. Instead of being utterly broken like the last time we saw these mechanisms, they are a lot more balanced this time round. Players get poison counters based on a creature’s toxic value, and if you get 10 counters the game is over. You also get cards with abilities that activate based on your opponent's poison counter. Phyrexian mana, on the other hand, is tied to a compleated Planeswalker this time. You can pay life instead of mana, allowing you to bring one out faster with some risk.

What is really exciting this time though, is a compleated edition bundle with 10 set boosters, a bunch of foil lands of different types, and two oil slick raised Mythic rares from the set alongside 10 oil slick raised lands. These oil slick raised cards are nothing but gorgeous and worth every bit of the price. However, it’s a bit disappointing that you get set boosters printed in the US packaged with the bundle. That’s because instead of using the same Japan-based printer as the actual set boosters, these US minted boosters come with foil cards that are curled out of the pack. It’s a bit of a downer for such an amazing product. But thank goodness, the quality of the oil slick raised cards are fantastic.

The new M:tG Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion retails at S$53 on the Shopee store for the cheapest bundle. It features tons of exciting cards, chase rares, and looks really fun to draft. Phyrexia: All Will Be One will also be released in various packages such as the commander decks, draft, set, and collector boosters. This is definitely a can buy if you’re a long time Magic: The Gathering player.
