LG Eclair QP5W review: Compact Atmos sound

LG Eclair QP5W

Clad in textured fabric, the LG Eclair QP5W is a looker. It's also pretty small for a 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar. It packs two front-firing speakers, one centre speaker, and two up-firing ones. There's also a wireless subwoofer for more boom. You can place it anywhere due to its small size, and its white colour helps it blend in with minimalistic interior designs.

Quick specs

  • 2x 20W front speakers, 20W centre speaker, 2x 20W up-firing speakers, 220W wireless subwoofer
  • Dolby Atmos support
  • Bluetooth, HDMI eARC, and USB

Sound-wise, the QP5W is fine for its size. It can fill up a small room, though the sound will feel small compared to a larger soundbar. Height channels are definitely there, but the bass can feel a tad underpowered when it comes to scenes that demand loud sound, such as explosions or dinosaur roars. If you're not too fussy, it will do.

Despite the attractive form factor and design, there are a few things I don't quite like about the speaker. For one, there's no numerical volume indicator. You'll have to rely on two LED lights that become brighter or dimmer depending on the volume. It's pretty hard to guess and I much prefer numbers. Another thing to note about this speaker is that it's somewhat lacking in connectivity options.

The soundbar features the usual optical, HDMI eARC and HDMI ports, but you'll have to make do with just Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless. There's no Wi-Fi, and the Soundbar App connects over Bluetooth. The app lets you make tweaks to the volume settings, change input sources, and more. However, the remote control is good enough that you won't need the app.

Retailing at a cool S$999, the LG Eclair QP5W offers a cute compact soundbar that doesn't sound too bad. But I'd argue that you may be better off with the very affordable Creative Stage 360, or the excellent Sonos Beam instead which has more wireless options. Get it from Shopee or Lazada.
