Suntory Varon review: Better skin

Suntory Varon

My wife has been nagging me to do something about my skin, which I'm convinced is perfectly fine. Now, obviously, I don't have any issues with my face (apart from the fact that it's too handsome). But it wouldn't hurt to get some help to make it even better. After all, I'm getting older, so to look younger, I decided to try out the new Suntory Varon, a 3-in-1 facial serum for men.

Quick specs

  • Comes in three scents: Classic, Original, and Fresh
  • Ingredients: Whisky barrel wood extract, oolong tea extract, acetylhexapeptide-8, inositol
  • Uses a water in oil in water method to keep ingredients separate

The Varon features whisky barrel wood extract (because it's Suntory), polyphenol extracted from oolong tea, inositol, which is used to moisturise dry areas of your skin, and acetylhexapeptide-8, an ingredient that promotes skin elasticity. I'm no scientist or doctor, so I can't tell you if these ingredients will work. But I am a reviewer, so it's all about testing. Suntory has a 10-day challenge where you should see a difference after using it for that period of time.

In order to see if there's one, I decided to apply the serum only to the left side of my face for 10 days in the morning. Right from day one, the left side (right in the picture below) felt a lot less dry, and smoother. I also checked in with my wife, the expert on skin care (she takes a long time each night). She told me she could feel a difference. I also took pictures over a 10-day period just to have pictorial proof. More importantly, if there's any difference from day one to day 10, it should be obvious. However, the daily photos don't show any difference. Neither did the photo from the first day compared to the last day. That said, I could feel the difference with my hand. The skin feels more moist, and softer. Plus I like the smell.

The process of applying the serum is quite simple, Wash your face, pump out one or two squirts worth of the cream, and dab it on your face. You can then spread it out by gently rubbing it. You can apply it once or twice a day — I did one — either after bathing, shaving, or before going to bed. There are three scents to choose from, Classic (woody), Original (floral), and Fresh (citrus). My favourite is Original, but Woody has a delectably manly smell that some may like.

The Suntory Varon isn't that cheap at S$28 for 20ml, and S$105 for 120ml, but it may be a small price to pay for nicer-looking skin. The 20ml has enough serum for 10 to 20 days, while 120ml should last for up to three months. Which means it's just a dollar a day to get your skin feeling a lot nicer. Get it from Shopee or Lazada (where it's currently S$80).
