Breachway hands-on: Plenty of potential

Breachway

If you love sci-fi roguelike games like I do, then be sure to keep Breachway in mind. Made by Edgeflow Studios, and published by Hooded Horse, Breachway sees you commanding a ship to explore the galaxy. Combat plays out with cards Slay the Spire style. It heads to early access on March 22, but I already had the opportunity to try out a press preview copy, and was left wanting more.

Quick notes

  • Managing your skill cards and resources is tricky and fun
  • Crew members have special abilities that can change the tide of battle
  • Game can be quite challenging, which is great

Breachway reminds me of Faster Than Light, which I played, and loved. The preview copy didn't have an threat to push you to quickly leave a sector. I actually like that, because I really love exploring. You move from point to point, with either encounters or combat happening each time. You have to be careful, because you may meet enemy ships that counter your build, or encounters that disable your ship's capabilities until you can get it fixed. Exploring side paths will also drain fuel, and if you aren't back on the main routes when you run out, the game is over.

Combat plays out in a turn-based style, unlike the pausable real time shenanigans of FTL. You draw from a pool of cards, and can play as many as long as you have the resources for it. The cards are split into various types: Resource generation, attack, defence, hacking, or security. Attack cards can also have different types, such as missiles (which takes a turn to hit), precision (which targets the enemies parts), or ion, which affects shields. There's an element of strategy in that you have to watch the timings to raise your shields, or attack quickly enough to disable their attacks from hitting you. It's seriously lots of fun if you like strategy card games.

The preview build didn't have any carry-over mechanics implemented yet, so I can't tell you how the roguelike progression will be. But I'd expect that there will be some elements to help make it easier with each subsequent attempt. Otherwise, it can feel a little challenging. I only managed to get to the end boss once before it blew me up to smithereens. The preview build had three different ships to pick from — each with a different playstyle — so I could experiment. It may be different when this hits early access.

Breachway will be available for early access on March 22, 2024 on Steam, GOG, or the Epic Games Store. It's already looking to be a fun game that I will play over and over again. The demo will also be available on Feb 5 to 12 as part of Steam Next Fest where you can try out two ships, the tutorial, and a zone.
