Dyson V12 Detect Slim review: Laser power

Dyson V12 Detect Slim

Using lasers to reveal almost invisible dust seems magical, but it's actually pure science. The Dyson V12 Detect Slim and its laser-equipped Fluffy cleaner head makes cleaning fun, and shows you just how dirty your floors are. Besides the laser Fluffy head, the V12 also comes with an anti-tangle screw, and a crevice pipe with lights. It's all you need to keep your home dust-free, really.

Quick specs

  • 150 air watts suction power
  • Four speed modes
  • Comes with brush heads including Laser Fluffy, anti-tangle hair screw, combination tool, light pipe crevice tool

The laser works. Hair and dust particles show up clearly, and cast a shadow too. You can easily check if the floor is clean by just going back to see if it's still there. The V12 also has a acoustic dust sensor, which counts the number of particles the vacuum has sucked in. It's pretty fun to see just how much dirt you've sucked away after a cleaning run by checking the LCD display at the back of the unit. Besides the laser Fluffy head, the V12 also comes with an anti-tangle hair screw head, and a light pipe crevice tool. Depending on your version you buy, it may also come with additional cleaner heads, such as stubborn dirt brush and a direct drive cleaner head.

The vacuum itself has four different speed modes, eco, medium, max, and auto. Auto replaces medium when you attach the Fluffy cleaner head. This mode turns the V12's 150 air watts of suction to the max when it detects a lot of dust. So if you hear the vacuum cranking up the speed, that's probably why. The anti-tangle hair screw head is pretty good if you have long hair or pets. It spins hair and fur around the spiral screw head and then sucks it right into the bin. It's pretty cool. The light pipe crevice tool is interesting, but I found the light too bright, and using it for a while will make you see spots.

I was worried that the laser would be harmful to pets since it's angled to shine on the floor and my cats love chasing around lasers. Thankfully, they mostly ignore the vacuum when it's in operation, and Dyson has stated that the light is designed to be harmless to pets and humans. Obviously, this doesn't mean you should stare into it. I did notice that the lens can get dirt on it, making the output light patchy. Cleaning it with a cloth does the trick, but I could never get it fully spotless. You can also turn off the laser. Battery life is rated for up to 60 minutes, and there's a timer on the V12's display to show you just how much juice is left. Boost will last you around 10 to 20 minutes, while medium will give you around 40 minutes or so.

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim has a starting price of S$899 for the Fluffy model, while the Total Clean (which also include the Fluffy head) goes for S$999. There will also be an Absolute Extra bundle, which retails at S$1,249 and comes with an additional battery too. Get it from Dyson's online store or Shopee.
