Camp Royale Foldable Bike review: Nimble and compact

Camp Royale Folding Bike

The Camp Royale Foldable Bike is a great foldie to get you places. It's small and nimble, and folds to a compact size for stowing away. If the design looks familiar — you aren't seeing things. After all, this Camp bike greatly resembles a popular line of foldable bikes, although at a much cheaper price. It also folds the same way. I own a bike from that popular line, by the way.

Quick specs

  • Dimensions: 1480 x 540 x 960 mm, Folded at 600 x 380 mm x 630 mm
  • Crankset: 48T
  • Weight: 13.1 kg, max rider weight 110 kg
  • Crankset: 48T

Sporting 16-inch wheels and a Chromoly Steel frame, the Royale is a sweet ride. I had plenty of fun riding it around the Park Connector Network, and its smaller wheels made it easier to handle, especially on tight turns. The frame is solid, and easily able to take my 85kg weight with no issues. There's also a five year warranty on the frame, and a one year warranty on the rest of the parts.

The Camp Royale comes with a six-speed gearing system, a two-speed rear derailleur and a Sturmey Archer 3 internal hub. The six-speeds don't work sequentially unlike normal bikes. Instead you work with the three-speed hub, and whether the rear derailleur is activated affects the gearing. So the fastest speed and most resistance will be on the third speed with the derailleur on.

It takes a while to get used to, and once you're accustomed to it, you'll be switching gears easy. The internal hub only switches when you stop pedalling, so you have to keep that in mind when changing gear. You can turn the derailleur on and off anytime. I do note that it's a bit hard to see the gearing numbers on the handlebar, but you'll soon get a feel of the bike gears without needing to look at it. You'll want to switch the default handlebar grips — they are adequate, but I prefer the Brooks Leather grips.

The Camp Royale Foldable Bike rides exactly as you'd expect from a foldable bike of similar design. The price too, is attractive, at S$1,299, you'll get everything you need. You can top up more for a front carbon wheel as well. It's available at Mobot's online store.
