Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 review: Less is more

Asus ROG Zephyrus G16

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is the latest evolution of the Taiwanese PC maker's slim gaming notebook series. While the size and weight haven't changed drastically over the years, Asus has continued to experiment with the look and feel, while ensuring that these laptops perform in games. The new 2024 model is not as eye-catching as the design of the previous two years. But its new subdued look is more appropriate for the office. I tested the 16-inch version (G16), but it also comes in a 14-inch form factor (G14).

Quick specs

  • 16-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 pixel OLED, 240Hz
  • 1.85kg, 16mm thick
  • Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor with Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 graphics and 32GB system memory
  • Thunderbolt 4, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.1, SD card reader, audio jack

With just a silver LED bar running diagonally across the lid, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 looks more like an elegant, premium notebook than a gaming PC. I would compare it to the silver, LED-less version of the Razer Blade 14. I'm a fan of the new Zephyrus design. It's a grown-up, confident version that can switch between work and play without calling attention to itself. Of course, Asus hasn't ditched LEDs entirely. You can enable, and customise the lighting effect of the Zephyrus' LED bar — dubbed Slash Lighting — in the Asus Armoury Crate app. I like the Sonic Match option, which syncs the LED lighting effect with the music that's being played on the laptop. But for those who don't like the bling, they can just turn it off.

At 1.85kg, and 14.9mm thick, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is reasonably portable for a gaming notebook. Its aluminium chassis is solid with little flex, though the lid could be a tad more rigid. You get an excellent OLED screen — a first for an Asus ROG notebook — with a sharp 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution. As you'd expect, the refresh rate is a smooth 240Hz with Nvidia G-Sync support. The OLED is bright, vibrant, and supports Dolby Vision for when you prefer Netflix over games. The keyboard is shallow, but tactile. The front-facing speakers sound better than the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16. I had to adjust my hands initially as the keyboard feels smaller than expected for a 16-incher. But the touchpad is as large as the one on an Apple MacBook, and there are also four handy shortcut keys above the Function keys.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 sports Intel's new Core Ultra 9 185H processor, and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4070 graphics. Gaming-wise, it performs similarly to rivals like the Razer Blade 14 (2023). For example, it produced 79fps at Ultra setting at 1080p Watch Dogs: Legion compared with 78fps for the Razer. However, its PCMark 10 score of 7,472 is lower than the Intel Core i9-powered Asus ROG Strix Scar (8,915). Like all slim gaming laptops, the bottom of the notebook, and the area above the Function keys get really warm, scalding almost, in benchmarks. The keyboard also feels warm, but the heat is bearable. The laptop mostly maintained its performance level throughout 3DMark's Speed Way Stress Test. The GPU temperature topped out at 81 degrees Celsius, while the CPU was around 79 degrees.

Battery life is good for a gaming notebook. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 lasted 6.5 hours in a video playback test at maximum brightness. My G16 review set with the GeForce RTX 4070 costs S$4,199, while the GeForce RTX 4060 version is S$3,699. These prices are slightly cheaper than the Razer Blade 14, though they are still more expensive than a typical gaming laptop. But that's the price of the G16's lovely OLED screen, and slim, premium chassis. The new design also means it's less likely to distract your colleagues in the workplace.
