Acer Swift Go 14 (2024) review: Nice upgrades

Acer Swift Go 14 (2024)

The latest Acer Swift Go 14 (2024) adds several small but meaningful tweaks to its design. All the attention, though, will probably be on its Intel Core Ultra processor, which has a built-in neural processing unit (NPU) to handle AI workloads. But even if you don't use the AI-powered features, the Swift Go 14 performs better than its predecessor, and is just as slim, and light as before. A good, mainstream notebook for mobile workers.

Quick specs

  • 14-inch (2,880 x 1,800 pixels) OLED (90Hz) screen
  • Intel Core Ultra 5 processor 125H with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD
  • 2x Thunderbolt 4, 2x USB Type-A, HDMI, microSD card reader, audio jack
  • 1.32kg

The new Acer Swift Go has mostly the same design as last year's model. Its aluminium chassis even weighs around the same (1.32kg). And it remains as nondescript as before, which is probably desirable for a work laptop. But Acer has made some subtle tweaks that improve the usability. For example, its excellent 1,440p webcam now comes with a physical privacy shutter. Like other AI PCs coming out this year, the Swift also supports Windows Studio Effects, which uses the NPU for AI-supported camera effects such as automatic framing and background blur. There's still no facial recognition, but the fingerprint sensor on the power button works well enough. Like some Lenovo notebooks, the Swift's lid now sticks out slightly, making it easier to open the notebook.

The touchpad is 44% larger than before. But this “multi-control touchpad” (see photo above) can also control media playback, and volume. Swipe your finger across the lit-up Swift logo on the touchpad to toggle these functions. Note that you cannot turn off the backlight for the “Swift” toggle. While these media playback controls worked with the default Windows Media Player, it didn't work with the older legacy version, or VLC Media Player. The 14-inch display appears similar to last year's version. It's a crisp, vibrant OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, and is DisplayHDR 500 certified. The ports (two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, and HDMI) are unchanged, but there's no reason to. There's even a microSD card reader. And to show that it's an AI PC, the Swift sports a Windows Copilot key on the keyboard.

The Acer Swift Go 14 is also one of the first laptops I have tried with Wi-Fi 7. Now, you'd expect most 2024 notebooks to support the latest Wi-Fi standard that's rolling out now. But due to a limited supply of Wi-Fi 7 chipsets, it's not the case. Asus' new notebooks such as the Zenbook Duo, for example, are still on Wi-Fi 6E. I tested the Acer with the Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Wi-Fi 7 router (review soon), and clocked 2.2Gbps, which is definitely faster than most laptops. My S$1,349 review unit comes with the lower-end Core Ultra 5 chip — Acer also has a Core Ultra 7 version (S$1,599). But its PCMark score (7,050) isn't shabby at all, and is quite an improvement over last year's Swift (6,093).

Battery life is good at around 7 hours, though last year's Core i7-powered Swift managed 8 hours in the same video playback test at maximum brightness. Nevertheless, you should get a full day's usage out of this laptop under normal conditions (I find 70% brightness to be more than adequate). As a capable yet lightweight notebook for everyday use, the Acer Swift Go 14 (2024) fits the bill. The latest model adds some AI smarts, and better performance. The Wi-Fi 7 support also makes this laptop future-proof. It's competitively priced, too. Get it now from Acer's official store on Shopee, and Lazada.
