It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a gamer desiring the best gaming experience, must have a high refresh rate monitor. Now, there are options aplenty out there. But my top value pick is the Acer Predator XB253Q, which hits the sweet spot for refresh rate, resolution and price.
- Full-HD resolution
- 144Hz refresh rate
- 24.5-inch IPS display
- Nvidia G-Sync compatible
With a refresh rate of 144Hz, the Acer runs smooth in games. It is a huge difference compared to the standard 60Hz monitor. The Acer is also Nvidia G-Sync compatible, which means its refresh rate synchronises with the game's frame rates to reduce screen tearing or stuttering. In short, expect buttery smooth performance.
The Acer's 24.5-inch screen is the optimal size for esports titles like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. You can easily track all your opponents on the screen at a glance. Its 1080p resolution is also ideal for gamers as even an entry-level gaming PC can produce decent frame rates at this resolution. On the downside, text and icons could be a tad sharper. But since gaming performance is the priority, it is an acceptable tradeoff.
I like that you can tilt and swivel the monitor. The height is also adjustable, so you don't need to place it on a pile of books to get the right height (top of the screen should be just below your eye level). There is even a pop-out stand at the back for your gaming headphones.
The Acer Predator XB253Q (S$398) is one of the more affordable high refresh rate gaming monitors in the market. If you have extra moolah, Acer also sells a 240Hz version of the XB253Q at S$498.
